70s+ Hike Malibu Creek State Park

Topanga Canyon road is blocked.  Our new EASY hiking destination is Malibu Creek State Park.

Sunday, May 19th

Schedule

9:00 – Leave LA.

10:00 – Arrive at Malibu Creek main parking lot.  Park and pay ($3 per hour, 3 hours should suffice).  Toilets available.

Meet at the starting point of the main trail (Crags Road) to the visitor center.

10:05 – Hike 1 mile on nearly flat dirt road along the creek, to the visitors center

10:45 – Alternative activities:

1) short (1/4 mile) flat walk to the Rock Pool, then return.  May see divers or climbers.

2) stay put and see the exhibits in the visitor center.

3) hike 1/4 mile and up 100 feet to view Century Lake, then return.

11:30 – Hike back 1 mile to parking lot

12:00 – Optional picnic lunch (or snacks) at tables next to the parking lot.  Or leave for home.

12:30 – Leave for home.

What to wear

Dress for the expected temperatures.  Good walking shoes or boots.  Sunhat, sunscreen, sunglasses,

water bottle.  Walking poles if you like them.  Trails are wide so shorts are OK.

Meet Point

Main parking lot at the starting point of the main trail (Crags Road) to the visitor center, by toilets.  Note you will pass an additional parking lot before reaching the main one.

Lunch

Bring a brown bag lunch.  There are picnic tables there.

Carpooling

We will arrange carpools.  When you RSVP, indicate if you

1. can be a driver and how many available spaces in your car or

2. would like someone from the group to give you a ride or

3.  will drive yourself and meet the group there.

Directions

From Pacific Coast Highway, travel north on Malibu Canyon Rd about 6 miles.  The park entrance is on the left just before reaching Mulholland.  You can also reach the park from the north on Las Virgenes Rd going south from the 101 freeway.
