MEET THE PROPHET(S) ISAIAH Please join Rabbi Joel Rembaum in an introductory exploration of the BOOK OF ISAIAH, among the most influential of the books of the Hebrew Bible. We will learn how the person called Isaiah son of Amotz, who prophesied during the reigns of four kings who ruled from approximately 780-680 BCE, laid foundations of ideology and literary style that continued to shape Judaism in the Holy Land and the Diaspora long after his passing. We will read selections from a number of its sixty-six chapters and consider why so many different voices reverberate through the three discrete sections of the book. We will consider how the richness of the authors’ vocabularies, the beauty and power of their poetry, and the spirituality of their theology shaped Jewish (and Christian) faith over the course of 2700 years. While Hebrew literacy is helpful, it is not necessary. All students should have a recent and highly regarded English translation handy for all class meetings (for example, the JPS Hebrew/English Tanakh).
We will meet on Wednesday evenings, 7:30-9:00 pm: December 3, 2025— February 25, 2026 (except December 24 and 31).
