In this two hour course\, we will di scuss stories by Jewish writers including Cynthia Ozick\, Philip Roth\, Is aac Babel\, and Bernard Malamud and why writers should embrace the messine ss. I'll discuss strategies creating one of my own characters. Then we wil l have an hour to practice writing our own difficult characters anda chanc e to share our writing.\n\n \;\n\nKaren E. Bender is the author of the story collection Refund\, which was a Finalist for the National Book Awar d in Fiction and shortlisted for the Frank O'Connor International Story pr ize\, as well as The New Order and the Words of Dr. L. All three of her co llections have been Longlisted for the Story prize. Her novels are Like No rmal People and A Town of Empty Rooms. Her fiction has appeared in magazin es including The New Yorker\, Granta\, Ploughshares\, Zoetrope\, The Yale Review\, the Harvard Review and others and have been included in the Best American Short Stories and Best American Mystery series. She has won three Pushcart prizes.
