All 6th grade families are invited to participate in a series of exclusives experience designed for families immersed in preparing for a B’nei Mitzvah.
B’nei Mitzvah Cohort: Havdallah Experience
October 15th, 2016 on the Ganzburg Roof at 7:15pm
Under the stars, Temple Beth Am’s 6th grade families will begin a new week and a new year of our journey together as families embarking on a B’nei Mitzvah journey. After a Havdallah service and dessert refreshments, Rabbis Hoffman and Chorny will facilitate a conversation amongst parents and soon to be B’nei Mitzvah about ways to enhance to make the Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience, from the planning to the celebration, one that is meaningful and transformative for whole family. Parents and B’nei Mitzvah children will share their aspirations and blessings for each other for the coming year of the process. Families will leave with a better understanding how they will be supported and can support others in their own B’nei Mitzvah cohort.
Moving Traditions’ B’nai Mitzvah Pilot Program
In the beginning of 2017, we will be piloting a new program through an organization called Moving Traditions for 6th graders, and their parents. This program aims to help families and b’nei mitzvah students make thoughtful, informed decisions around the gendered and social elements of the b’nai mitzvah process. There will be a limited number of spots available for this program, and more information will be released soon.
B’nei Mitzvah Cohort: Mikvah Experience at AJU
(Dates TBD during Winter 2017)
The mikvah is a ritual bath, a space designated for meditative experiences that mark transitional moments in our lives. Our B'nei Mitzvah, accompanied by their parent(s), will have the opportunity to celebrate their burgeoning Jewish adulthood by immersing in living waters.
B’nei Mitzvah Cohort: Beach Experience
May 7th, Santa Monica Beach (Time and Location TBD)
Living in Los Angeles, we are so privileged to live so close to a majestic ocean and a beautiful beach. In this setting, the waters will provide us the venue to gather to reflect upon our year’s process of preparing to celebrate becoming B’nei Mitzvah. Through ritual we will share blessings for the coming year of celebration, and with beach games and a potluck picnic we will give thanks for being together on this journey.
6th Grade Shabbat
June 3rd, 2017 9:30am
To close out the year, all 6th grade families unite for a special Shabbat morning service devoted to this cohort. Students will be invited to participate in leadership roles throughout the service, including reading Torah, leading Tefillah and sharing words of Torah. Together, we will experience a Shabbat morning in our Main Sanctuary service, Shir Hadash, and then eat and socialize in a kiddush. We will rejoice in a year of journeying together during the 6th grade, and prepare to celebrate together as a community in the year to come.
